Personal Investing

While life insurance provides for your family when you are gone, annuities are financial contracts that can help you while you are living. Annnuities come in different types.1 Deferred annuities can help you save money tax deferred for retirement. Immediate annuities can provide you and your spouse with life time income. Annuities can be immediate or deferred.

Deferred annuities are either fixed or variable and payouts are deferred until a specific future date.

  • Fixed annuities provide a guaranteed rate over a certain period. Fixed annuities generally offer a slightly higher interest rate than CDs and bonds, while the risk is also slightly higher. In addition, like other types of annuities, the principal is allowed to grow tax-deferred until it is withdrawn.
  • Variable annuities offer a variable interest rate based on the value of the underlying investment – typically stocks, bonds and money market funds and are subject to market fluctuations. Often, variable annuities include a death benefit where the investor’s heirs will receive either the full amount of principal invested or the current market value of the contract, whichever is greater.

An immediate annuity begins providing payouts at once. Payouts may continue either for a specific period or for life, depending on the contract terms.

1 Tax-qualified contracts such as IRAs, 401(k)s and others are tax-deferred regardless of whether they are funded with an annuity. However, annuities do provide other features and benefits including, but not limited to, a guaranteed death benefit (based on the claims-paying ability of the issuer) and income choices, for which a mortality and expense risk is charged.
