Online Protection

Keeping your online financial and personal information secure and confidential remains one of our top priorities. We ensure your privacy and security by offering the latest in security technology and features. However, you play an important role in the security of your online accounts as well.

Our Role

  • We have built Online Banking to help provide a secure environment when accessing your accounts.
  • The privacy of communications between you (your browser) and our servers is ensured via encryption technology with 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Encryption scrambles messages exchanged between your browser and our Online Banking server.
  • We employ various access control mechanisms, including intrusion detection and anti-virus, and monitor for and protect our systems from potential malicious activity.
  • Our Online Banking servers are fault-tolerant, and provide for uninterruptible access, even in the event of various types of failures.
  • We use strong authentication controls following guidance provided by Federal Regulators and information security based on regulations, security standards and industry best practices – including multi-factor authentication and layered security.
  • We provide various security features designed to help protect you with:
    • User ID and Password Complexity: It is important to verify that only authorized persons log in to Online Banking. This is achieved by strong User ID and Password complexity requirements. This helps prevent others from guessing your information and accessing your accounts.
    • Password Expiration: We set your password to expire as an added layer of security.
    • Timeout: This prevents curious persons from continuing your online banking session if you left your PC unattended without logging out. You may set the timeout period in the Online Banking User Options screen. We recommend that you always sign off (log out) when done banking online.
    • Online Statements: Online statements are facsimiles of traditional financial statements packaged and delivered to you securely within Online Banking. By eliminating your paper statement, you help stop thieves from stealing your information out of your mailbox.
    • Check Images: View an exact facsimile of your check transactions online to help prevent fraud.
    • Alerts: Check clear alerts, payment alerts, and balance alerts are financial tools we provide to help you to monitor your accounts more actively and to detect suspicious activity more easily.

Your Role

You play a crucial role in preventing others from logging on to your account.

  • Never reveal your User ID, Password or security questions to another person.
  • Never use easy-to-guess passwords such as:
    • Birth dates
    • First names
    • Pet names
    • Addresses
    • Phone numbers
    • Social Security numbers
    • Account numbers
  • You should periodically change your password in the User Option section of Online Banking.
  • Beware of suspicious emails or unsolicited phone calls regarding your accounts or online access and report them to us. We will never send you an email or call you asking for your Online Banking credentials.
  • Do not click on links to web pages or open attachments in unsolicited emails from unknown individuals or from individuals with whom you do not normally communicate, or that appear to be known but suspicious or otherwise unusual. If you have entered personal information after clicking on a link or suspect fraudulent behavior, please call us immediately at 703-584-3400 or 800-473-3247.
  • When you have completed your Online Banking session, always click on the “Exit” link and log out – do not simply close the window. Closing the browser completely after your session provides greater security.
  • Install and regularly update anti-virus and anti-spyware software. Perform frequent scans of your computer. Protect your computer with a firewall.
  • Monitor your accounts regularly and report any unauthorized activity to us immediately.
  • Set-up alerts through Online Banking.
