Phishing Scams

10/24/08 - Cardinal Bank has recently learned of a telephone scam targeting our card processor. Please note that this scam does not specifically target Cardinal Bank customers.

Cardholders have received computer-generated calls claiming to be from their financial institution. The calls claim their accounts have been frozen and then direct the cardholder to call a toll-free number to leave their debit card information in order to reactivate any cards. The toll-free number includes a recorded message that asks the customer to key their account number, card expiration date, and PIN.

Should you receive any questionable calls, please make sure you do not provide your personal information. As with all possible fraudulent situations, you are encouraged to take appropriate measures if a scam is suspected. Note that an excessive number of attempts at small dollar pre-authorizations may be an indication of intent to commit fraud.

To verify whether a call is legitimate, call the bank or visit the bank website, using phone numbers or internet addresses from your bank statement or account documentation. Do not call back a number provided over the phone or click on a link in an email.

If you believe that you have shared any account information with a suspicious party, please contact Cardinal Bank immediately.

9/25/08 - Cardinal Bank was recently notified that there may be a new phishing scam targeting our online processor, Digital Insight, and Cardinal Bank customers. The scam is designed to trick the recipient into clicking a link in the fraudulent e-mail for the purpose of acquiring sensitive data, such as passwords or financial information. If you receive an email purporting to be from Digital Insight or Cardinal Bank that asks you for your personal information, PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND!

The email contains language similar to the following:

"We inform you that your account is about to expire. It is strongly recommended to update it immediately. Update form is located here. However, failure to confirm your records may result in account suspension."

If you believe that you have shared any account information with a suspicious party, please contact Cardinal Bank immediately.

Remember, Cardinal Bank will never send unsolicited emails asking customers to provide, update, or verify personal account information, such as passwords, Social Security numbers, PINs, credit or check card numbers, or other confidential information. Cardinal Bank will also never send customers emails containing links to download software or applications.

If you feel that you may have received a fraudulent Cardinal Bank or Digital Insight email, please forward it to cardinalonline@cardinalbank.com. Please do not remove the original subject line, or change it in anyway when you forward it to us. If you have entered personal information after clicking on a link or suspect fraudulent behavior, please call us immediately at (703) 584-3400 or 800-473-3247.

The recipients of these emails were not specific to Digital Insight or Cardinal Bank and were completely random in nature.

The link contained in the fraudulent email has been detected and shut down.

However, please remember that if you receive an email or telephone inquiry asking for your personal information, PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND!
