Trojan Horse Warning

3/8/10 - Warning: Trojan horse seeks credit card and other sensitive information

We have received information regarding viruses.  The Torpig Mebroot Sinowal Virus (aka JS.Scob.Trojan, Scob, and JS.Toofeer) attempts to gain potentially sensitive information from users with infected PCs. When infected users attempt to visit sites requiring a log-in and password, the link and page appear to be legitimate, but the virus redirects them to a different page to gain possible account information.

The Trojan horse malware has been around since 2006, has many variants and can adapt well to current Anti-Virus/Malware products that consumers use today.

Antivirus software detects and responds to various types of malware (malicious software), including viruses, worms and other programs designed to damage or disrupt a computer.  For more information about protecting your computer and your privacy please review the following antivirus software information.  (link to DI antivirus software brochure)

If you believe that you have been a victim of fraud or identity theft, please contact Cardinal Bank immediately and contact the three major credit bureaus listed below to place a fraud alert on your credit file. SMiShing Scam

9/4/09 - Warning: SMiShing SCAMS ARE HITTING CELL PHONE USERS NATIONWIDE

We have received information indicating that there has been an increase in SMiShing scams in Virginia. SMiShing is the use of cell phone text messages to solicit personal information such as ATM pin codes and credit card three-digit security codes.

The text messages often appear to come from a legitimate source, such as a bank or e-commerce website. The intent of the message is to trick the victim into clicking on a link or calling a particular phone number that could lead to requests for personal information used to steal the victim's identity.

Customer's should be highly suspicious when receiving messages directing them to provide personal information such as ATM pin codes, credit card three-digit security codes, credit card, debit card, bank account numbers or their social security number. Rather than provide the information, the customer should contact the bank or credit card company directly to verify the validity of the message.

If customers receive a text message, telephone inquiry or an email asking for personal information, they should not respond! Cardinal Bank will never send text messages, place phone calls or send unsolicited emails asking customers to provide, update or verify personal account information, such as passwords, Social Security numbers, PINs, credit or check card numbers, or other confidential information.

If you believe that you have shared any account information with a suspicious party, please contact Cardinal Bank immediately.

Phishing Scam

8/27/09 - Cardinal Bank has recently received reports that a caller claiming to be from card services has contacted some customers stating that the customer’s card has been compromised, and offering assistance in getting a new card ordered by requesting the customer’s card number and social security number.

You should be highly suspicious when receiving messages directing you to provide credit card, debit card or bank account numbers.  Rather than provide the information, you should contact the bank or credit card company directly to verify the validity of the message.

You should never give your account number to people that you do not know, especially over the phone.  Cardinal Bank will never place phone calls or send unsolicited emails asking customers to provide, update or verify personal account information, such as passwords, Social Security numbers, PINs, credit or check card numbers, or other confidential information.

If you believe that you have shared any account information with a suspicious party, please contact Cardinal Bank immediately.

Online Banking Scam

3/9/09 - Cardinal Bank has recently learned of a new version of malware targeting online banking users, particularly users of business or corporate banking sites. Once the infection is present, the malware attempts to trick users by popping up fraudulent login screens for the purpose of acquiring sensitive data such as usernames, passwords, challenge questions, token challenge numbers and other information.

This infection is sometimes referred to as Bankpatch.C, Agent-IPS Trojan or by several other names (there are several known variants), this malware is not targeted to our online processor, Digital Insight or Cardinal Bank. Digital Insight systems have not been breached. Your information is still safe. This malware is not directly targeted to Cardinal Bank or Digital Insight products or services.

Since the malware primarily uses false login windows to capture information, business or corporate banking users should be advised to report any strange corporate or business banking login windows, or anything that looks different on a login window. These could be signs that the user's computer has been affected by the malware. As a general precaution, users should also close all other browser sessions and tabs before logging into a banking session.

If you believe that you have shared any account information with a suspicious party, please contact Cardinal Bank immediately.

Phishing Scams

10/24/08 - Cardinal Bank has recently learned of a telephone scam targeting our card processor. Please note that this scam does not specifically target Cardinal Bank customers.

Cardholders have received computer-generated calls claiming to be from their financial institution. The calls claim their accounts have been frozen and then direct the cardholder to call a toll-free number to leave their debit card information in order to reactivate any cards. The toll-free number includes a recorded message that asks the customer to key their account number, card expiration date, and PIN.

Should you receive any questionable calls, please make sure you do not provide your personal information. As with all possible fraudulent situations, you are encouraged to take appropriate measures if a scam is suspected. Note that an excessive number of attempts at small dollar pre-authorizations may be an indication of intent to commit fraud.

To verify whether a call is legitimate, call the bank or visit the bank website, using phone numbers or internet addresses from your bank statement or account documentation. Do not call back a number provided over the phone or click on a link in an email.

If you believe that you have shared any account information with a suspicious party, please contact Cardinal Bank immediately.

9/25/08 - Cardinal Bank was recently notified that there may be a new phishing scam targeting our online processor, Digital Insight, and Cardinal Bank customers. If you receive an email purporting to be from Digital Insight or Cardinal Bank that asks you for your personal information, PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND!

The email contains language similar to the following:

"We inform you that your account is about to expire. It is strongly recommended to update it immediately. Update form is located here. However, failure to confirm your records may result in account suspension."

If you believe that you have shared any account information with a suspicious party, please contact Cardinal Bank immediately.
